If you are the surviving spouse of a veteran, you can keep the spouses military plate, as long as it is not the Disabled Veterans Plate. If you are a disabled veteran, you can choose to have an International Sign of Access (ISA) displayed on your desk name plates; or, opt-in to receiving a Disabled Persons Placard for every vehicle that has a Disabled Veteran Plate. If you order new military plates that feature the new design, or the ISA, to replace an existing military plate, you will be assigned a new plate number.
The current black-and-white nameplates worn on Army service uniforms are not authorized for wearing on the AGSU. Soldiers will have until Oct. 1, 2027, to obtain an ASGU uniform and replace the ASU as their duty uniform.
The emergency contact name and address were originally included on the service identification tags, but were removed at the end of the Second World War. Military ID tags also included the letter “T” for those with the Tetanus vaccine, but this was eliminated as well by the 1950s.
By World War II, military identification tags were considered official parts of uniforms, and evolved to the size and shape that they are in todays uniforms: a round rectangle made from a nickel-copper alloy. Unofficially, identification tags came into existence during the Civil War, as soldiers were concerned that if they died, nobody could identify them.
